Is Residential, Assisted Living or Personal Care the Right Choice?

One of the primary advantages of Residential/Personal Care Homes is the "family like" atmosphere provided by the premises and staff. The types of personal care services that are offered by Homes vary, so it is important to know what type of care your loved one requires.
Activities are another area in which you may be interested. Large Assisted Living Facilities offer a wide range of group activities. Smaller homes such as Residential and Personal Care offer more intimate, small group, social and physical interaction. Ask what activities are offered, how often, and group size. It is important to know your loved one’s preferences and capabilities in order to help choose an appropriate setting.

DISCLOSURE STATEMENT: A Disclosure Statement is to empower consumers by describing a facility’s policies and services in a uniform manner. This format gives prospective residents and their families consistent categories of information from which they can compare facilities and services. By requiring the Disclosure Statement, the department (HHSC, Health and Human Services Commission) is not mandating that all services listed should be provided, but provides a format to describe services that are provided.
The Disclosure Statement is not intended to take the place of visiting the facility, talking with residents, or meeting one-on-one with the facility staff. Rather, it serves as additional information for making an informed decision about the care provided by each facility.
